Apartheid and segregation in the world

The Apartheid, segregation and racism are problems and conflicts that have caused controversy all around the world during different periods of time. Those topics are still being discussed and we can prove that by some movies, testimonials and documents that talk about this topics in different ages of history.

¨Goodbye Bafana¨ is a movie that shows the period of the Apartheid in the 60's in South Africa. It tells the story about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and his prison guard James Gregory. It also shows the relationship of James Gregory and his wife Gloria as they face many problems while Mandela is under Gregory´s care. In this movie, Nelson Mandela is arrested and James Gregory has the task of watching him. He lived in South Africa with his family and started to work in the prison of Robben Island and after this, he starts to have problems with the politics and the racism. Gregory begins to express his discordance for South African apartheid. Then, Gregory challenges his superiors and has as purpose improve Mandela's life in jail and after twenty seven years in prison he is finally released. The ¨Freedom Charter¨ is a prohibited document that appears on the movie and it says that all people, black and white should have the same rights.

Nowadays, we can perceive we still have that conflict about racism. For example, the testimonial about immigration taken from ¨Humans of New York¨ (Hony) in 2016, shows the reasons of a woman's vote for today’s president of the United States Donald Trump. It says Muslims and Latinos are coming to her country. Also that they have a game plan, that they want to take their jobs and all the businesses and she hopes that Donald Trump does something about it.

The testimonial of Hony is showing that this woman is blaming Muslims and Latinos for what is happening in her country, she says that they are in a way invading her country. On the other hand, the one of Gloria´s Gregory shows his opinion about the Apartheid and she is defending this system.

Gloria´s testimonial and the one of the woman of Hony are connected because throughout history, there have always been discourses about racism, fear and generalization, so it is something repetitive that is shown in both ages. Some cases of this are the Nazis, Hitler and in this case the Muslims and Latinos and the Apartheid. Despite they happened in a different time and space, both of them want to say that they are superior and more powerful than other people.
